Challenge: Aging Infrastructure & Redevelopment Needs

The Eastland Port, nestled in the heart of Gisborne, Tairāwhiti, serves as a crucial lifeline for the region’s trade and growth. However, with part of the port, known as Wharf 7, having been constructed in 1967 — it was time to look at demolishing and rebuilding this section of the port to make it fit for purpose.

With the replacement of Wharf 8 also being planned at a later stage, Wharf 7 was not just a construction project; it is part of a broader port redevelopment initiative.

Solution: Meticulous Planning & Partner Selection
At Seven Rivers, we recognize that success in any project begins with precise planning and assembling the right team. This is why our approach to Wharf 7 involved a competitive Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) process, comprehensive risk profiling, and a detailed procurement strategy.

Project Insight: Aligning the Vision

Over the course of six months, we were able to facilitate intensive collaboration between two separate contractors and the client’s designer. This process allowed the contractors to work separately with the designer, resulting in two distinct project solutions.

Having established a relationship with both contractors and gaining an insight into how these relationships would work moving forward, it became easier for the client and their designer to determine which final proposal best suited their vision.

Result: A Streamlined Process
At Seven Rivers, our involvement with the Wharf 7 project didn’t end there. After evaluating the final proposals and selecting the preferred contractor, our attention to detail continued into the implementation stages.
