Challenge: Managing Multiple Projects
Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency is entrusted with the care of the nation’s road network and is at the forefront of ensuring safe and efficient transportation across regions.
In our capacity as Engineer to Contract (ETC), we embarked on a journey of collaboration and commitment, overseeing various projects to support this agency’s endeavours.
Additional Challenges: Navigating Cyclone Aftermath
Despite our relationship with Waka Kotahi being ongoing and encompassing several different projects, we faced an unexpected challenge when Cyclone Gabriel and subsequent storms wreaked havoc on the region.
These natural disasters caused road closures, landslides, and significant damage that compromised the community’s connectivity. To resolve this issue, a collective and highly targeted effort was required.
During this time, our early partnership with Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency was put to the test — but luckily, our team was ready for the challenge!
Solution: Building Bridges & Relationships
As ETC, our role goes beyond conventional contract management and construction support. With a focus on relationship management, we ensure that all parties (Waka Kotahi and their contractors) have a clear understanding of their contractual obligations and can manoeuvre high-pressure scenarios with confidence and clarity.
Our careful planning systems and strategic administration of contracts also help prevent conflicts and promote a collaborative environment. This ensures the agency’s focus can remain on road maintenance and recovery.
Result: Paving the Way for Progress
Following the storms, the recovery work in the Gisborne region is still taking centre stage. The community’s needs are paramount, and our contribution lies in working closely with Waka Kotahi to maintain and reopen roads, as well as supporting the community’s current and long-term goals.
Looking forward, the government’s substantial investment to upgrade the region’s roads over the next five to ten years is providing hope to the region. We envision an extended partnership with Waka Kotahi and hope to play a pivotal role in this next project phase.
